Welcome back to the monthly Critical Home Repair Newsletter. In 2019 when Covid-19 hit we were faced with whether we could continue our program safely with our homeowners, volunteers, and staff in mind. We decided we would put CHR on hold until things got better. In 2021 we decided that we would go ahead and open back up with caution to the needs of our homeowners and volunteers. With much success and careful guidelines, we were able to serve over forty families. Many of you have helped us out in the past 12 months getting things up and going. It hasn't been easy, and we have seen a small slump in volunteers due to the pandemic. We know many of you enjoy reading about our upcoming projects and missed them during the past 2 years. So, without further delay, let's get back to the way we used to do things.
In the past three months, we served a total of 13 families. We had 149 volunteers give 1,018 hours in our community. Thank you volunteers for your help in making OKC a better place for us all. We have 2 new families in need this month and 2 homes to finish up and we are looking forward to working with you on these projects.
Please note: we will be closed for Good Friday, April 15th, and Saturday, April 16th. Have a Happy Easter
Mrs. Jackson April 7th - 9th
The first full week of April we will be working in Del City. We will be helping Mrs. Jackson with some minor repairs and maintenance of her home. She lives alone but has family to help when she is in need. When Mrs. Jackson found out she was approved for the CHR program she was jumping for joy and very thankful Habitat is going to help her. We will be fixing siding as needed, painting the exterior, and fixing the flooring in the bathroom and kitchen. We will fix her plumbing in the kitchen, replace her toilets, minor drywall repairs and add grab bars in the bathroom. We will need 8-10 volunteers each day to complete this job. If you know anyone that enjoys painting give them a call. If you are interested in this project here is the link to sign up: https://www.helpmyhabitat.com/need/detail/?need_id=676292
Ms. Tate April 13th - 14th
The second home of this month will be returning to Ms. Tate's home to finish the work we started last month, due to work that is required that was not discovered during the evaluation. She is located just outside of Jones, Oklahoma. Ms. Tate needed the flooring in her bathroom and laundry room completely removed and the frame and support joist replaced. The floor joists were completely rotten, and her washer and dryer, and hot water tank were sinking. We will be installing vinyl flooring down to finish the laundry room, drywall in the bathroom and laundry room, trim, and installing her toilet. We will need 3-5 volunteers each day and hope to see you there. Parking on the street is not advised. There is parking on her lot so contact Chris for more information. Ms. Christon April 21st - 23rd
The third week is the week that our volunteer group, the ROVERS, will be working, but that doesn't exclude others from joining. In this case, we need as many as possible because we will be painting the full exterior of this home. Ms. Christon has lived in her home for more than 25 years and enjoys having a home to spend time with her family and her grandkids. We started this project last month but discovered the home needed a lot more siding replaced than we expected and there is still more to replace. We replaced three exterior doors and about 60 boards of siding. We have about 60 more to do along with 3 windows to replace. We hope to see you along with our ROVERS. We will need 10 - 15 volunteers each day to finish this project. Here is the link to sign up: https://www.helpmyhabitat.com/need/detail/?need_id=676252
Mr. and Mrs. Matlock April 28th - 30th
The final week of April we will be working on the SE side of OKC. Mr. and Mrs. Matlock have owned their home for 35 years. They have taken particularly good care of their home, raised their children, and have been a part of the community around them. As they have gotten older, their mobility has decreased. Mrs. Matlock is now in a wheelchair and depends on others to help her with some everyday needs. They asked Habitat to help them by remodeling a bathroom to make accessibility easier for Mrs. Matlock. Our task at their home will be to demo the bathroom and prepare its conversion to a roll in shower. We will also be addressing the wheelchair ramp outside their home and replacing it with a more suitable and safer option. We need 3- 5 volunteers to complete this project each day.
