Critical Home Repair Newsletter June 2023
Hello June, and goodbye May. If you're like us at Critical Home Repair, you're thankful, but ready to say goodbye to May and its spring showers. Not because we don't need the rain, but because it sometimes gets in the way of what we all love to do - help local families! Fun Fact about June: June used to be the fourth month of the year! Before Julius Caesar came to power, the calendar year only had 10 months. We hope all mothers out there had a wonderful Mother's Day and even received some lovely "May" flowers. As we start off the month with a holiday, we want to say we hope everyone had a great and safe Memorial Day, plus wish all dads a "Happy Father's Day!" This month we have six homes we'll work on, including some in each part of the metro. We'd love to have you join us and bring a friend to learn a new talent or roll up your sleeves and dust off that old tape measure. As a reminder, volunteer spots fill up quickly and are limited due to the size of the home being repaired. Volunteer slots are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Sign up online or if you are not able to or have trouble logging in, contact our CHR Volunteer Coordinator Chris Hearn, at 405-409-5557 or email CHRinfo@cohfh.org. If you have a group you'd like to bring, please call, and set up a date in advance. Reminder: Our summer hours start after Memorial Weekend. We now work from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.
June 1st - 3rd
Blake and Allison
Kicking off the first week of June is the home of Blake and Allison. Blake and Allison have lived in Yukon for a few years, along with their two children. They reached out to Central Oklahoma Habitat's Critical Home Repair program through a friend. Their family deals with day-to-day allergies and they applied hoping for new windows. Air, dirt and dust coming through the old windows can be a challenge, plus they make it cold in the winters and hot in the summers. Replacing their windows will help lower their electric bills and improve their quality of life. If you are handy with a hammer, drill or just want to learn how to replace windows, come on out and help us make this family's home a place to feel safe and secure. https://www.helpmyhabitat.com/need/detail/?need_id=814715

Melvin
During the second week of June, one of our projects will be with Melvin. Melvin lives in the northeast part of Oklahoma City and has lived there for over 25 years. He said our help repairing his home will make it a better and decent place to live. "It will help preserve my independence at home and make my home safer," Melvin said. We will be focusing on some windows, lighting in his kitchen and dining room. We'll also work on some minor plumbing along with installing a new vanity. https://www.helpmyhabitat.com/need/detail/?need_id=805931

The other job during our second week of June is in Spencer, Oklahoma. We will be working at John's home. John has owned his home for nine years and lives there with his four children. We'll focus on repairing the bedroom floor and installing new flooring. He also needs some steps, drywall repairs and minor plumbing. We have all the tools to do the things John needs, all we need is your hands to make it happen. Let us join hands and give John and his kids a hand up. https://www.helpmyhabitat.com/need/detail/?need_id=814723

Kylie
The third week of June we will be in Del City, Oklahoma. Kylie lives there with her three children. Our focus is to take care of code violations. Kylie said having home repairs done would be life changing. "Just the plumbing alone would be a blessing," Kylie said. "We are currently doing dishes in the bathtub, which is clogging up that drain, as well." Along with addressing her plumbing needs, volunteers will be helping fix drywall holes, lighting, install a new vanity, shower valves and shower surround. She heard about our program from a friend who received our help years ago. https://www.helpmyhabitat.com/need/detail/?need_id=814726

Candi
For the fourth week of June, we are traveling to the southwest side of OKC to help Candi who has lived in her home since it was built in 1952 - that's more than 50 years. At the age of 63, Candi said she paid her home off in 2002, which was a great accomplishment, but due to disabilities and her fixed income she could not fix anything by herself. She is hoping CHR will help her fix some electrical problems, plumbing and repair some windows and doors. We will finish our work by replacing the flooring in her bathroom. Let's help Ms. Candi feel more at home. https://www.helpmyhabitat.com/need/detail/?need_id=814729

Steven
The final home this month belongs to Steven. We have a group coming out on June 27th to help us start this project. Steven has some city code violations, and we plan to take care of them, along with some other items that will help Steven feel more comfortable in his home. We will add new vinyl siding, fix his trim on the outside and update his kitchen with new countertops, a kitchen sink and faucet, as well as work on some plumbing. We will also replace three ceiling fans, add grab bars, install a new bathroom door and a new storm door. By the time we are done, Steven may not even recognize his home. If you would like to see the transformation, then you need to sign up and help us change some lives, one home at a time. https://www.helpmyhabitat.com/need/detail/?need_id=814731 July Reminders: Our offices will be closed Tuesday, July 4th, in celebration of Independence Day. Our Construction staff will also be off on July 1st.
